Ish is a partner in our property team. He helps businesses with their commercial property deals, particularly sales, purchases and leases.

Ish specialises in commercial leasing, and buying and selling office buildings. Since the Christchurch earthquakes he has become an expert in the property, seismic and insurance issues associated with earthquakes and other natural disasters. He helps clients resolve these issues and advises them on how to protect themselves in the event of a future disaster.

Ish advises a wide range of clients, including property investors, shopping centre owners, and commercial tenants, as well as intermediaries such as international property consultancies. He also advises government agencies and public entities.

Ish has a deep understanding of the commercial property market, and can help steer you through the process of negotiating leases or buying and selling commercial property. He can help you understand your rights and obligations under existing leases, particularly in relation to rent reviews and lease renewals. He can also advise you on what you are entitled to if a building is damaged and what your obligations are when a lease ends – and he can help you resolve any disputes that may arise.

Ish has advised:

  • Viaduct Leasing Limited as it restructured the lease for the building occupied by Kensington Swan and KPMG on the Auckland waterfront. The process was complicated by the fact that both the landlord and the tenants were undertaking substantial refurbishment and the tenants needed to be able to occupy the building during this process.
  • Cornerstone Investments as it negotiated simultaneously with two potential tenants for the same nine floors of an office tower in Wellington.
  • A large IT company as it renegotiated the lease with a temperamental landlord for premises being used as a data centre. Ish helped prepare a new lease and negotiated the terms with the landlord’s solicitors.
  • CentrePort on numerous leasing issues raised by the Seddon earthquakes in 2013 and the Kaikoura earthquakes in 2016.
  • IBM on the development and leasing work for its premises in Petone and its $80m data centre facility in Auckland.
