Chris is a senior partner in our Construction and Major Projects team. He focuses exclusively on helping clients to resolve building and construction disputes.

Chris advises clients from throughout the industry, including large contracting companies, sub-contractors, consultants, owners and insurers. He works closely with in-house counsel and senior management.

Chris’ many years of experience means he has advised on a wide variety of disputes, including tendering and payment disputes,  claims for variations and time extensions,  breaches of contracts, termination disputes and claims of professional negligence.

He is skilled at designing tailored strategies to help clients achieve an acceptable outcome quickly and cost-effectively.   He will work with you to identify the issues and what you hope to achieve, then advise you on the best course to take and manage the process for you – including representing you at adjudication, arbitration or in court, if necessary.

Chris has advised: 

  • Downer NZ Ltd on numerous roading, building and wastewater project disputes involving principals, subcontractors, suppliers and consultants. 
  • Whanganui District Council in the High Court against the designers of their wastewater treatment plant. The case was subsequently settled at mediation.
  • Leighton/Downer joint venture in the successful defence of a High Court claim by a subcontractor alleging a breach of a tender contract.
  • Various parties (including principals, contractors, sub-contractors and consultants) in major leaky building litigation in several High Courts throughout New Zealand.    
  • A consultancy firm in a major arbitration with the Crown involving claims and counterclaims of approximately $20 m (ongoing).
