Auckland Super City

Kensington Swan Lawyers

Auckland Super City

The creation of the Auckland Super City will be the most significant change undertaken in New Zealand local government. These changes will result in significant legal implications for council operations, business, and ratepayers. Following 3,500 written and 550 oral submissions, the proposal in the Royal Commission’s Report on Auckland Governance to create a single unitary authority has largely been adopted by the Government. Bills to bring about this change are being guided through Parliament by the Auckland Governance Legislation Select Committee.

Kensington Swan’s Auckland Super City team is currently working with clients to assist with the legal and strategic issues concerning the establishment of the Auckland Council and its associated council-controlled organisations and local boards.

Super City change management and working with the Council

Council performance, governance, human resources, local government finance, rates, resource management, property and Maori representation will be key issues for both the Auckland Transition Authority and the Super City Council in one of the largest change management projects in New Zealand’s history.

The impact of the Super City on commercial operators, be they current council suppliers and contactors or council owned entities, will be profound. Kensington Swan can help answer questions concerning current contractual relationships, the tender process for new work, the resolution of commercial disputes, and the role of community-based providers.

Team members at Kensington Swan have advised and acted on behalf numerous businesses, all the local authorities in the Auckland region, and many of the council-controlled organisations.
