Josey is a
Solicitor in the Maori Legal Group of Kensington Swan. Josey joined
the firm in early 2005 after working in the litigation team of a London
law firm in the UK
for two years during which she gained a strong grounding in
litigation practice and procedure.
Within the Maori Legal Group, Josey
specialises in the advocacy, primarily, preparing and presenting
claims before the Waitangi Tribunal. Her particular interest is the
historical and cultural aspects of the Treaty claims process. She has
been involved in the Urewera, Central
North Island,
National Park, Whanganui, Tauranga, East Coast, Te Arawa Settlement
and King Country Inquiries where she has appeared as counsel for
whanau, hapu and iwi claimants.
Her experience includes assisting
claimants with the preparation and presentation of evidence as well
as cross-examining witnesses and challenging conflicting
evidence. In addition, she has attended Judicial Conferences on
behalf of clients. She has also had involvement in the funding
process and has assisted clients with applications to the Crown
Forestry Rental Trust.
Before leaving for the UK,
Josey worked with the Te Matahauariki customary law research unit at
the University of Waikato Law School where she assisted with research
and co-ordination for an international symposium on Polynesian
customary law. This mix of experience in both litigation and
historical research means Josey is particularly well equipped for the
specialised nature of the Waitangi Tribunal process.
She has also worked as a research
assistant for the New Zealand Institute of Public Law at Victoria
University and
as a Legal Editor for the Laws of New Zealand legal publication.
Josey also holds a Bachelor of Arts with a major in History. As well,
she has studied Te Reo Maori to Bursary level.
