Deborah leads
the Maori Legal Services group in the firm with two decades
experience in all aspects of the public law and the law affecting
Maori, the Treaty and iwi organisations.
Maori and
Treaty issues
The Maori
Legal Services group includes a team of 14 dedicated specialists as
well as several consultants who provide comprehensive advice in these
areas.
Deborah and
her team act as general advisers to Maori iwi
and hapu on commercial and corporate
issues, Maori fisheries and other resource projects, structuring of iwi bodies, commercial development and on several
Treaty settlement negotiations with the Crown. She and the team are
the largest litigation team specialising in this area in the country
and have acted as counsel on most of the major Waitangi Tribunal
Inquiries over the last 15 years as well as many other cases in other
courts.
As well, she
and her team has advised government, Crown agencies, local government and the
private sector on these issues.
Deborah and

Commercial
development
Deborah has
had a long standing involvement in the development and
commercialisation of intellectual property and research. She
has been a director of a university company focusing on this issue
and has advised many bodies on research, public funding and
intellectual property development.
Deborah also
specializes in resource law and has worked on projects including
mining operations, coastal marine projects, transmission and
network operations, forestry and fishing projects and management of
environmental audits to name a few .
